I tried to play this game for what it was but it was just pointless to start all over from scratch when you’ve already been down that same exact road with Rock Band 2.

The game is meant to be “cheaper” thanks to the 10 dollar fee you will be charged for the transfer of songs to Rock Band 2. The code you receive is quite annoying to get, requiring you go online to the Rock Band site, which gives you a code you put into the PS3…why not just give me this code without putting me through all the trouble?

The songs itself are great…all fun, quirky songs that have become classics in their own way that you can all play on Rock Band. Some of them are not as fun as you might think it might be playing them, but most are, and are harder than you would think too.

It’s worth it as one big track pack but I felt the “game” part of it was truly lacking. If you’re like me, after the transfer you’ll find no reason to touch this game ever again and find yourself rushing over to Gamestop or something to trade in for a game you actually would play.

What’s different: earn swag to customize your rock den, play “rock challenges” to tear down buildings, “super-easy” difficulty mode and auto-bass kick (on drums) for younger beginners; during normal game-play you also cannot fail out, instead you temporarily drop out and lose some “studs” (money) followed by the opportunity to recover most of them (just like the other traveler’s tales titles); during rock challenges however you can fail – and have no overdrive.

What’s similar: download songs, but only ones that have been deemed “family friendly” by the developers (about half of my existing library showed up when I launched it).

If you love RB and cheeky humor you’ll probably want to add this variation on the theme, especially if you like the other Lego titles by traveler’s tales. If you think you want a rock band type game but worry about lyric content or online interactions for the kids in your household, this was probably designed with you in mind. If you are strictly a hard core rocker take a careful look at the set-list; it’s cheaper than downloading individual songs but not as good a deal as RB2 was, and there is a lot of pop content despite some good classic rock’n'roll.

Update after several weeks of ownership: This game occasionally freezes on my new slim PS3, usually during some menu load, causing me to deduct one of my original 4 stars.

As for the rest of the game, it is kinda cool but at half the price. Good rental or much later bargain bin game.

BUT NO. THEY DON’T GET TO PLAY THE GAME TODAY BECAUSE WE DIDN’T KNOW THAT YOU NEED A MICROPHONE OR DRUM OR GUITAR TO PLAY THIS THING!

It doesn’t say it in the product description, but you need at least a plug in microphone to use the game. Maybe lots of people who already own guitar hero or some other music game know that you need more than the controllers—but we didn’t. We had no clue. We thought that the PS3, plus the game and controllers and we would be all set.

Needless to say I am pretty angry that this info was NOT on the Amazon description page. As purchased the game is absolutely useless.
